The legendary Hermès Birkin bag that started it all is going up for auction this summer after 25 years. Jane Birkin’s original 1984 Birkin, covered in scratches and stickers, is finally hitting the Sotheby’s auction block.

The story goes that Jane met Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas on a plane and told him she wanted a big bag. Inspired by her, he created this unique prototype, which even has a shoulder strap not found on regular Birkins.
The bag will be displayed in New York and Paris before the auction. It’s only been shown publicly twice before. Jane donated it to a French AIDS charity in 1994 and it later ended up with a private collector.
Who will buy this one-of-a-kind piece and for how much? Sotheby’s is keeping that under wraps for now, but it’s expected to be a record-breaking sale given the Birkin’s iconic status.
